Two Traditions, One Living Craft

Kalamkari — literally "pen work" — belongs to Andhra Pradesh and survives in two schools. In Srikalahasti, artists draw freehand with a kalam, a tamarind twig wrapped in wool that feeds kasimi, a black dye fermented from iron and jaggery. In Machilipatnam, motifs are stamped with carved teak blocks. Both rely on natural dyes fixed in a myrobalan bath, the cloth washed between every colour.
