The weave of Kaithoon

Kota Doria is woven in and around Kaithoon, a small town near Kota in Rajasthan, largely by women working traditional pit looms. The weave is also called Masuria, remembering the Mysore weavers a Kota general resettled here in the Mughal era. Its genius is the khat: a checked square traditionally built of fourteen yarns — eight cotton for structure, six silk for sheen — repeated hundreds of times across the width. The craft carries a Geographical Indication tag.
