Pattu Sarees — The South Silk Wardrobe in One Place

"Pattu" simply means silk in Tamil and Telugu — and this page is where South India's silk traditions live together: grand Kanjivarams, easy-draping soft silks and temple-border weaves for every ritual, festival and celebration on your calendar.

Think of pattu as the family name and Kanjivaram as its most celebrated member. Across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, weaving clusters each built their own answer to the silk saree — Kanchipuram's interlocked korvai borders, Mysore's famously smooth minimal-border silks, Uppada's featherlight jamdani technique. This collection gathers the whole family: handwoven showpieces, everyday soft silks and honest silk-blends, each labelled for exactly what it is.

Pattu Saree Prices

Prices in this collection currently run from about ₹3,250 to around ₹9,300 — a pattu for first salaries and silver jubilees alike. Prices shown are regular list prices — seasonal offers applied automatically at checkout often bring them lower:

Price band What you get
Under ₹4,000 Soft-silk and silk-blend pattu with temple borders — festive looks starting near ₹3,250
₹4,000 – ₹5,000 The value sweet spot — see Kanjivaram sarees under ₹5,000 for wedding-guest-ready weaves
₹5,000 – ₹7,500 Richer zari work, contrast pallus and heavier handwoven bodies
₹7,500+ The collection's showpieces — broad borders and dense zari, topping out around ₹9,300

A Pattu for Every Occasion

Weddings and the bridal trousseau

A South Indian wedding runs on pattu — deep reds, peacock greens and royal blues with heavy contrast pallus for the bride, and slightly lighter jewel tones for mothers, sisters and aunts. Build the trousseau so each major ceremony gets its own drape.

Festive days

Pongal, Ugadi, Onam, Varalakshmi Vratham, Navratri, Diwali — the southern festival calendar is long, and a rotation of soft-silk pattus in bright kattam checks and temple borders will carry you through it in comfort.

Temple visits and milestone pujas

Lighter temple-border soft silks stay comfortable through long seated rituals and drape modestly — the traditional choice for gruhapravesams, seemantham ceremonies and first-birthday pujas.

Gifting

A pattu saree is South India's default gift of honour — for mothers on milestone birthdays, teachers at retirements, daughters-in-law at their first Deepavali. Rich colour plus real zari reads as respect.

How to Read a Pattu Saree

A little weave literacy goes a long way. On a korvai piece, look for the ridge where the separately woven border interlocks with the body. Genuine zari shows a reddish or silver core when a loose thread end is gently untwisted, while synthetic zari stays uniformly white or gold. Handwoven silk has real weight and a warm, muted sheen, and a Silk Mark tag adds third-party assurance on pure-silk pieces.

Our own labelling rule is simple: premium handwoven silks are described as silk, blends are described as blends, and price follows fabric. You will never find a silk-blend here dressed up as something it is not.

Pattu Glossary

  • Pattu: the Tamil and Telugu word for silk — and, by extension, the South Indian silk saree itself.
  • Korvai: border and body woven separately, often in contrast colours, then interlocked by hand on the loom.
  • Kattam: the bold woven checks that are a signature of southern looms.
  • Zari: metallic thread — traditionally silver-cored — woven into borders, butas and pallus.
  • Pallu: the decorated end panel of the saree, at its grandest in south silk weaves.
  • Kanjivaram: the crown jewel of the pattu family, handwoven in and around Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu.
  • Mysore and Uppada silk: other storied southern weaves — Mysore prized for its smooth, minimal-border finish, Uppada for featherlight jamdani-style work.

New to silk? Our Complete Kanjivaram Guide covers weave, authenticity checks and care in detail — the short version: dry-clean only, store wrapped in muslin, and refold along new lines twice a year.

Frequently Asked Questions — Pattu Sarees

What is a pattu saree, and is it the same as a Kanjivaram?
Pattu simply means silk in Tamil and Telugu, so a pattu saree is a South Indian silk saree rather than one single weave. Kanjivaram is the most famous pattu, but Arani, Dharmavaram, soft silk and other South silks are pattu too — every Kanjivaram is a pattu, yet not every pattu is a Kanjivaram. When you want to check what you are holding, look at the weave rather than the label: a pure mulberry-silk pattu has a soft natural sheen that shifts colour as the light moves, the zari is woven in rather than printed, and scraping a thread of zari reveals a reddish or silver core instead of a white synthetic one. Genuine pure-silk pieces also carry a Silk Mark, and Kanjivaram specifically carries a GI tag. At MySilkLove our pattu collection spans pure-silk handloom pieces and honestly labelled silk-blend weaves — every listing states its fabric, so a blend is always described as a blend, and our team can talk you through any piece on WhatsApp.
Why do pattu saree prices vary so much, and what does one cost at MySilkLove?
Four things drive the price of a pattu saree: the silk itself (pure mulberry silk costs far more than a silk blend), the zari (pure silver or gold zari versus tested or copper-core zari), the density and intricacy of the motifs, and the loom time — a simple design may take a fortnight while a heavy bridal weave can take months. In the wider market, handloom pure-silk pattu sarees generally start around ₹8,000–10,000 and bridal pieces with real zari climb well beyond ₹50,000. At MySilkLove, the pattu sarees currently in stock are listed between roughly ₹3,264 and ₹6,978, with about 146 pieces live at any time — a mix of honestly labelled silk-blend weaves at the entry level and richer silk pieces at the top. Those are regular list prices; seasonal offers apply automatically at checkout and often bring the amount you pay lower. Sourcing directly from weavers means no middleman markup, and every order is backed by COD, free worldwide shipping and easy 7-day returns.
How should I care for and store a pattu silk saree?
Silk rewards patience. Dry cleaning is the safest choice for any pattu with zari work, and you do not need to do it after every wear — once every two or three wears, or when there is a visible mark, is plenty. Never machine wash or wring a pattu, and never soak it in hot water, which dulls the sheen and can bleed the dye. When ironing, always press on the reverse side at a low setting with a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the fabric, so direct heat never blackens the zari. For storage, wrap the saree in soft cotton or muslin rather than plastic — silk needs to breathe, and trapped moisture tarnishes zari. Keep it in a cool, dark cupboard, tuck in a few neem leaves or cloves instead of chemical mothballs, and refold along a different line every three to four months so permanent creases never weaken the silk. Every pattu from MySilkLove ships with care guidance, and our team is happy to advise on a specific piece over WhatsApp.
Which occasions suit a pattu saree, and how do I style one?
A pattu saree is the traditional South Indian choice for weddings, temple visits, housewarmings, naming ceremonies and milestone family functions, and lighter soft-silk pattus work beautifully for daytime receptions and festive office wear. Styling comes down to weight. A heavier zari-woven pattu holds a crisp Nivi drape: make neat, even pleats, let the pallu fall full length so the border work shows, and use a waist belt to carry the weight through a long function. Pair it with a woven or zari-worked blouse in a colour drawn from the border, temple or antique-gold jewellery, and fresh flowers or a sleek bun. A lighter soft-silk pattu suits a fluid drape, a contrast blouse and a single statement piece of jewellery. A reliable rule: echo the border colour in the blouse and let the body and pallu lead. Many pattu sarees at MySilkLove include a matching blouse piece, and our team can suggest a drape and pairing for your saree over WhatsApp.
