Kanjivaram Saree Price Guide 2026: What You Actually Pay at Each Tier

Short answer: in 2026 a Kanjivaram saree costs roughly ₹3,500–₹12,000 if it is a zari-woven, mill-spun silk in the Kanjivaram idiom, and ₹18,000 to ₹1,50,000+ if it is a pure-silk handloom woven in and around Kanchipuram. Almost every confusing price you see online sits somewhere on that split. This guide breaks down what each tier actually buys, and what MySilkLove has live today.

The four Kanjivaram price tiers in 2026

These are market-wide bands across Indian retail — not MySilkLove's own range, which is narrower and stated separately below.

The jump from tier 2 to tier 3 is not a marketing gap — it is a raw-material and labour cliff. Pure zari is silver wire gilded with gold; at current bullion rates the zari alone in a bridal Kanjivaram can cost more than an entire tier-1 saree.

We do not currently have pure handloom Kanjivaram live on the site. If a listing anywhere prices a "pure handloom Kanchipuram" at ₹4,000, the honest reading is that you are in tier 1 with tier-3 wording — which brings us to the part that actually protects you.

What actually drives a Kanjivaram's price

Three variables, in order of impact:

1. Zari content and grade. Pure zari (silver core, gold gilt) versus half-fine versus tested/copper zari is the single biggest cost line. A saree with 40% zari coverage in pure zari and the same design in tested zari can differ by ₹30,000.

2. Silk weight. Kanjivaram is sold by weight for a reason. A light 450g drape and a 850g bridal piece use nearly double the mulberry silk. Ask for the weight in grams — a genuine seller will know it.

3. Korvai — the expert's tell. In a true Kanjivaram the border and body are woven separately in different colours and interlocked by hand, with a third shuttle worked by a second weaver. This is korvai. Turn the saree over and look at the join line: on a korvai piece you will see a fine interlocked seam that does not come apart when you tug it gently from both sides, and the border colour will be solid on both faces. On a powerloom saree the "contrast border" is woven in one pass — the join is printed into the weave, and the reverse gives it away instantly. Korvai is the reason handloom Kanjivarams cost what they do: it needs two people on one loom.

Is a Kanjivaram under ₹5,000 "real"?

It is a real saree and it can be genuinely beautiful — but it is a Kanjivaram-style woven silk, not a Kanchipuram handloom. Both things can be true. Kanchipuram silk sarees carry a GI tag (registered 2005–06) that applies to handloom production in the Kanchipuram cluster; a mill-woven saree in the same motif vocabulary is not covered by it, whatever the listing says. The problem is never the ₹4,000 saree. The problem is a ₹4,000 saree sold with ₹40,000 words.

How to check before you pay

1. Ask for the weight. Under 500g at a "bridal handloom" price is a mismatch.
2. Ask which zari. "Tested zari" is a legitimate answer — it just isn't pure zari.
3. Check the reverse of the border. Korvai join or single-pass weave (see above).
4. Burn one loose zari thread (from the fall, not the pallu). Real zari leaves a silver-grey metallic residue; plastic zari melts and beads.
5. Compare against the tier table. If price and claim sit in different rows, ask why.
