Durga Puja 2026 Saree Guide: What to Wear from Shashthi to Dashami

Durga Puja 2026 runs from Shashthi on Saturday 17 October to Vijayadashami on Tuesday 20 October, with Mahalaya falling earlier on 10 October. Four days, four very different dress codes — morning anjali, evening pandal hopping, Ashtami's dressiest moment, and sindoor khela. The mistake most people make is buying one "Puja saree" and trying to stretch it across all four.

Here's how to actually plan it, day by day — including the one day you should deliberately not wear your best zari.

Durga Puja 2026: the dates that matter

• Mahalaya — Saturday 10 October. Devi Paksha begins. Not a dressing-up day, but it's your real deadline marker.
• Shashthi — Saturday 17 October. Bodhon; the Goddess's face is unveiled. Traditional, modest, daytime.
• Saptami — Sunday 18 October. Kola Bou snan at dawn, pandal hopping from evening.
• Ashtami — Monday 19 October. Pushpanjali morning, Sandhi Puja at dusk. The dressiest day of the four.
• Navami into Dashami — Monday 19 to Tuesday 20 October. Navami feasting, then Dashami: boron, sindoor khela, visarjan.

Panchang timings shift by a few hours between regions, and some almanacs mark Shashthi rituals from the evening of 16 October — worth confirming the muhurat with your own family priest before locking a morning plan.

The lal paar sada saree — and an honest note

The image everyone carries of Puja is the lal paar sada: a white or off-white body with a broad red border. In Bengal that's traditionally a garad or korial — garad with its heavier red border and unbleached body, korial the plainer, whiter cousin, both historically woven around Murshidabad. The undyed body is the point: it's considered ritually pure, which is why it's the Ashtami anjali saree rather than a party saree.

We don't stock garad or korial. I'd rather say that plainly than sell you something adjacent and call it garad — if your heart is set on a genuine one, buy it from a Bengal handloom source. What we do have is the same red-and-white grammar in other weaves, which is what most people are actually reaching for: a white ground with a strong red or gold border, or the reverse.

The Chalk White Woven Banarasi Silk Saree (₹4,661) is the closest in spirit — pale ground, zari doing all the talking, and it photographs beautifully in the flat grey light of an October morning. The pandal-hopping problem nobody warns you about

Here is the practical thing that decides whether you enjoy Saptami evening: weight. A saree runs anywhere from roughly 400g to 900g depending on weave and zari density, and that spread is not academic when you're on your feet for six hours, walking between pandals, standing in queues, sitting on the floor for bhog.

A heavy zari Banarasi in the upper half of that range is glorious for two hours and punishing for six. Save it for Ashtami, where you're mostly seated and photographed. For Saptami and Navami — the walking days — go lighter. My unpopular opinion: a lighter saree you re-drape confidently at 9pm looks better in every photograph than a magnificent one you've stopped adjusting because you're tired. Puja is a marathon, not a red carpet.

Sindoor khela: do not wear your best saree

On Dashami morning, married women smear vermilion on the Goddess and then on each other. It is joyous, messy and completely uncontrolled — sindoor goes on faces, hair partings, and inevitably shoulders and pallus.

Sindoor is pigment in an oil or wax base. On silk that does not lift out with a gentle wash: the oil carries the pigment into the fibre and sets there. Every year someone wears their Ashtami saree to sindoor khela and retires it permanently.

So: wear red to sindoor khela on purpose. A red or maroon ground hides vermilion the way white never will. Keep the chalk white for Ashtami anjali, where the only thing touching it is flower petals.

One scheduling warning: order before October

If you plan to have the blouse piece stitched, build in real time — and note that a stitched blouse can no longer be returned or exchanged. Once it's cut, it's yours.

Working back from Shashthi on 17 October: order by the first week of October at the latest. That leaves room for delivery, a tailor already buried in Puja orders, and one round of alteration. Ordering during Puja week is how people end up safety-pinning a blouse that doesn't fit.
