Navratri 2026 Colours: All 9 Days, 11-20 October, and What to Wear

Navratri 2026 begins on Sunday, 11 October and ends with Vijayadashami on Tuesday, 20 October. The nine colours, in order, are orange (11 Oct), white (12 Oct), red (13 Oct), royal blue (14 Oct), yellow (15 Oct), green (16 Oct), grey (17 Oct), purple (18 Oct) and peacock green (19 Oct). Below is what each colour actually means for what you drape, which weave carries which shade, and the honest bit nobody tells you: you do not need nine sarees.

The Navratri 2026 colour list, day by day

• Day 1 - Sunday 11 October - Orange. Ghatasthapana. Warm, high-energy, photographs beautifully in daylight puja.
• Day 2 - Monday 12 October - White. The quiet day. Off-white, ivory and cream all count.
• Day 3 - Tuesday 13 October - Red. The most-worn colour of the nine, and the safest.
• Day 4 - Wednesday 14 October - Royal Blue. Deep, saturated blue, not powder or sky.
• Day 5 - Thursday 15 October - Yellow. Haldi, mustard and marigold are all within range.
• Day 6 - Friday 16 October - Green. Traditional, and the easiest to shop in silk.
• Day 7 - Saturday 17 October - Grey. The day most wardrobes fall apart.
• Day 8 - Sunday 18 October - Purple. Ashtami. Deep aubergine and wine both read as purple.
• Day 9 - Monday 19 October - Peacock Green. Blue-leaning teal, not bottle green.

Dussehra falls the next day, Tuesday 20 October, and has no assigned colour - most people return to red or gold.

Why the colours change every year

The sequence is not fixed to the day number - it is anchored to the weekday Ghatasthapana falls on, then follows a set rotation. Because 2026 opens on a Sunday, Day 1 is orange. In a year that opens on a Monday, Day 1 would be white and the whole list shifts. This is exactly why a colour chart you saved from a previous Navratri will send you shopping for the wrong shade. Check the year, every year.

Nobody needs nine sarees

Here is a position we will happily defend: the nine-colour list is a ritual, not a shopping list. Bought properly, four sarees cover all nine nights.

• One orange or red silk covers Day 1 and Day 3 - the two highest-photographed days.
• One green covers Day 6, and a blue-leaning green covers Day 9 as well.
• One royal blue or purple covers Day 4 and Day 8.
• One light printed saree - white-ground or grey-ground - covers Day 2, Day 5 and Day 7.

Repeat on the mid-week days. Days 4 and 7 are the ones nobody photographs twice.

Match the weave to the night, not just the colour

Garba changes the calculation. A nine-yard Nauvari runs to roughly 800g of fabric - you feel every gram of it after three hours of dancing, and it is a beautiful choice for the puja and a punishing one for the dandiya floor. For nights you will actually move in, a tissue Paithani or a soft-silk Banarasi gives you the zari and the shine at a fraction of the weight. Save the heavy handloom for Ashtami and Vijayadashami, when you are standing, not spinning.

A note on the two colours that trip people up. Grey is the hardest festive shade in the list - a flat grey silk looks corporate under puja lights. It works when it is a print with a warm accent running through it, which is why a Kalamkari with grey and orange together is the smarter Day 7 answer than a solid grey. Peacock green is not bottle green; it sits between teal and blue, the same palette the traditional Paithani mor (peacock) motif is drawn from. If you own one Paithani in that family, Day 9 is already handled.
