Buying Sarees Online in Saudi Arabia (2026): the SAR 1,000 Duty Line, 15% VAT & What You Actually Pay

If you live in Saudi Arabia, a saree ordered from India arrives with no customs duty as long as the consignment is worth less than SAR 1,000, counting goods, shipping and insurance together. You still pay 15% VAT, because Saudi VAT has no minimum. At late-September 2026 rates (SAR 1 ≈ ₹25.5), SAR 1,000 works out to about ₹25,500, so almost any single saree clears duty-free and costs you only the VAT.

The two rules that decide what you pay

Rule 1: Customs duty only kicks in at SAR 1,000. The Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) says personal goods bought from online stores abroad are exempt from customs duty when the total value of the purchase is less than SAR 1,000, and when the item needs no clearance permission from another government agency. The total includes shipping and insurance, not just the price of the saree. Above that line, Saudi Arabia applies the GCC common external tariff, which is at least 5% on most goods and is charged on the CIF value. The exact rate depends on the tariff line customs assigns.

Rule 2: VAT applies to every parcel. ZATCA is explicit that personal shipments are not exempt from VAT, whatever their value. The 15% is worked out on the goods, shipping, insurance, any customs duty and the customs declaration fees. The express courier pays it at the port and collects it from you. ZATCA requires the courier to give you a copy of the customs declaration and a VAT receipt, so you can check every riyal.

Two things stand out. First, every single saree in our current range sits below the duty line, so for a normal order your only tax is VAT. Second, the ₹6,000 shipping threshold matters more than the tax. A ₹4,332 saree plus ₹1,000 shipping costs you almost as much as a ₹6,318 handloom Kanjivaram that ships free.

Shipping, currency and timing from MySilkLove

What to check before you order: authenticity from 4,000 km away

You can't touch the fabric, so check the details a listing can't fake easily.

• Korvai on a Kanjivaram. In a traditionally woven Kanjivaram, the border and body are woven separately and interlocked on the loom. On the reverse this shows as a zig-zag join where the two meet. Ask for a photo of the back of the border. A printed or fused border has no join.
• Zari type. "Pure zari" means silver thread electroplated with gold, wound on a silk core. "Tested zari" uses copper or metallised polyester. Both are legitimate, but the price should match the claim.
• Silk Mark for pure-silk claims. The Silk Mark label from India's Silk Mark Organisation is how a pure-silk claim is certified. If a seller says "pure silk" and can't show one, be careful. Returns: know the international terms first

International orders have tighter terms than Indian ones. You get 2 days from delivery to raise a return, you pay the return courier, and the refund covers the product only. Any reverse import duty charged at India's ports is deducted. Exchanges aren't offered on international orders. Also, any alteration voids a return: blouse stitching, fall, pico or pre-draping all make the saree non-returnable. Frequently asked questions

Do I pay customs duty on a saree shipped to Saudi Arabia?

Not if the consignment's total value (goods, shipping and insurance) is under SAR 1,000 and it needs no special clearance permit. Above SAR 1,000, the GCC tariff of at least 5% applies to the CIF value.

Is there any way to avoid the 15% VAT?

No. ZATCA applies VAT to imported personal shipments regardless of value, except for goods the VAT law itself exempts. Expect to pay 15% on the goods plus shipping, insurance and fees.

Will the courier ask for a copy of my Iqama?

ZATCA says it doesn't require a copy of your ID for personal express shipments. The courier needs your full name and civil ID number. If a courier asks for more money "for customs", ask for the customs declaration. It lists every charge.

Can I pay in Saudi riyals?

Prices are charged in Indian rupees, and your card provider converts to riyals at its own rate. Check your card's foreign-transaction fee before you pay.
